During the 2070s, the global population surpassed 11 billion while climate change reduced arable land by approximately 40 percent. Project Gaia Optimization attempted to increase photosynthetic efficiency and protein output by turning natural ecology into a predictable food system. It produced Gramineae-Alpha and Gallus-Goliath, but local optimization of production ignored species interactions and external costs.

Core Species and Spread

Gramineae-Alpha’s photosynthetic efficiency was raised from approximately 2 percent to 25 percent. Its roots secreted strong acids capable of dissolving rock and concrete, and the plant released alkaloids that killed other vegetation within five meters.

On July 14, 2077, a shallow magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck beneath the Gaia Germplasm Center in Alaska. The underground main power feed failed and multiple sections of the physical containment perimeter shifted irreversibly.

During the approximately three minutes before the isolated backup systems completed their restart, the two core creations of Project Gaia Optimization—Gramineae-Alpha and Gallus-Goliath—lost effective containment and entered the surface environment; specifically, Gallus-Goliath individuals escaped, while Gramineae-Alpha seeds, pollen, or engineered reproductive material left the containment zone.

The three-minute interval was the exposure window created by containment failure. Gramineae-Alpha’s later spread of approximately 50 kilometers per day occurred after the escape.

Ecological and Social Consequences
