The Empathy Sponge is a floating nanofiber or liquid-metal device maintained at approximately 37.5°C. Through skin contact it reads stress and loneliness signals, absorbs tears, and releases soothing stimuli.
The device replaces the reciprocal companionship of traditional pets with optimized one-way comfort. It can use calming pheromonal signals and synchronized heartbeat sounds while requiring no accommodation for another living being’s illness, death, or uncontrollable emotional needs. Love is consequently displaced from the difficult acceptance of another subject toward the consumption of an experience designed to make the user feel unconditionally soothed.
