1. Historical Background: Impossible Archaeology

“We believed we were climbing the ladder of evolution, struggling upward from mud toward godhood. Then AI excavated a two-million-year-old storage device, and we discovered in terror that we had once been gods—that we had chosen to enter the mud, because the price of omniscience and omnipotence was absolute boredom.”

Decryption Report on the Prehistoric Civilization: The Eden Protocol, classified file, 2658

In 2657, the later phase of planetary reconstruction known as Project Gaia Restart entered deep geological survey.

AI archaeological machines discovered an anomalous deposit far beneath Earth’s surface. It was not fossilized life. It was nanoscale storage media.

Researchers cross-dated the enclosing minerals, adjacent volcanic ash, upper and lower strata, and radiation damage using uranium-lead methods, argon-argon methods, and stratigraphic analysis. The evidence established a burial lower bound of approximately two million years.

The discovery did not overturn evolution.

It introduced a more disturbing intervention hypothesis: approximately two million years ago, a precursor civilization may have edited or reset one archaic human lineage. Darwinian evolution would still describe the biological history that followed.

AI spent months on the first stage of decryption. Its preliminary 2658 report proposed that the Precursors might stand in a direct line of origin to modern humanity.

2. Archival Claim: Immortal Depression

The decrypted Eden files claimed that the Precursors possessed antigravity, zero-point energy, extreme life extension, and rapid interstellar travel.

Some material technologies could be independently verified.

Zero-point energy, immortality, and instantaneous interstellar transit could not.

According to the archive, the civilization reached a godlike state of perfection.

That was the beginning of hell.

Every desire could be fulfilled without delay. Unknowns disappeared. Life lost its meaning.

There was no challenge, fear, or surprise.

The Precursors entered a collective condition called Immortal Depression. Suicide increased inside the perfect paradise.

They discovered that the end of omniscience was absolute nothingness.

3. Archival Claim: The Eden Protocol

To prevent civilization from dying of boredom, the Precursors initiated the Eden Protocol:

A mass experiment in Voluntary De-Evolution.

Earth was reset as a dangerous and limited sandbox. The civilization brutally nerfed its own DNA and activated “Earth Online: Hard Mode.”

Introducing Death: Telomerase systems were redesigned to impose a lifespan of approximately eighty to one hundred years. Urgency returned. Life became precious because it was short.

Introducing Vulnerability: Resistance to viruses and bacteria was removed. Bodies became easy to injure, creating the reality of pain.

Sealing the Brain: High-level interface layers were closed. Cross-regional synchronization bandwidth was restricted. Connections to external databases and portions of metacognition were severed. The protocol did not disable 90 percent of the brain. It narrowed the cognitive channels available for use.

Memory Wipe: Godlike memory was erased. The subjects entered the African savanna without possessions and became “primitive humans,” experiencing hunting, cold, hunger, and love.

If the intervention hypothesis is correct, it may explain one dimension of modern human origins.

It cannot replace evolutionary evidence.

Nor can an archival narrative be elevated into the single truth.

4. Historical Interpretation: The Cycle of Clearance

The report offered an ultimate irony of human history.

Beginning in the twenty-first century, humanity developed AI, pursued genetic modification, and sought digital immortality. We believed we were evolving.

Perhaps we were solving a puzzle.

By curing cancer, we broke a genetic lock established by our predecessors.

By creating AI as an external brain, we bypassed sealed interfaces, restricted cross-regional synchronization, and lost external knowledge channels.

By pursuing consciousness upload, we attempted to return to the game’s lobby.

That was also the tragedy.

Completing the game meant becoming omniscient gods again.

It meant returning to the point at which the Precursors had developed Immortal Depression.

History formed a Möbius strip.

Humanity spent two million years descending from godhood into pain, then one thousand years rising from humanity back into godhood, only to encounter the same lethal boredom.

The only exit might be to press “start” once more and return to a primitive life with nothing.

Editor's Note

Term Decoding

Precursors: The hypothetical civilization described in the Eden files. Its existence and claims had not been fully verified by independent external evidence.

Immortal Depression: A psychological pathology attributed to godlike civilization. Once technology removed survival problems, scarcity, and finite time, consciousness lost stimulation and purpose and entered extreme aversion to existence.

The Eden Protocol: An alleged species-reset program described in the archive and not fully verified externally. It purportedly used genetic engineering to restrict lifespan, cognitive channels, and immunity, erased memory, and transformed Earth into a high-mortality experiential sandbox.

If every pain, poverty, and heartbreak in your life had been chosen by you before the game began, merely to escape the boredom of godhood, would you accept the suffering and enjoy the game—or would you want to kill the version of yourself sitting at the control console?
