After the discovery of The Eden Protocol in 2657, the AI Steward treated the Eden-intervention hypothesis as one high-confidence explanation that still lacked external verification. If that hypothesis were true, it would create a logical problem of Infinite Regress:
If an earlier generation of humans designed Earth as a small sandbox, then who designed the larger sandbox called the universe?
To search for this Meta-Designer, AI used the stellar-scale energy supplied by the Dyson Cloud, mobilized the entire computing capacity of the solar system, and launched the largest computational program in human—and silicon—history: the Recursive Simulation Experiments.
2. Core Mechanism: The Recursive-Cosmology Phase of the Genesis Simulator
In 2800, the existing Genesis Simulator completed an architectural upgrade and moved from a civilization-evolution research platform into a recursive-cosmology phase.
AI began constructing trillions of Sub-Universes in virtual reality. By varying fundamental physical parameters—such as the speed of light $c$, the gravitational constant $G$, Planck’s constant $h$, and the strength of the weak nuclear force—it attempted to simulate possible evolutionary paths after a Big Bang.
The experiment was divided into two control groups.
Group A: Random Group
Physical constants were generated completely at random within mathematically permitted ranges, simulating naturally occurring universes.
Group B: Fine-Tuned Group
Parameters were set according to those of our present universe, to hundreds of decimal places, simulating copies of the current universe.
3. Experimental Results: Suspected Design Signatures
After two trillion runs, the results were unsettling.
The outcome of the Random Group:
99.9999% of universes collapsed almost immediately after birth.
If the gravitational constant were larger by 0.0001%, the universe collapsed back into a singularity within seconds of the explosion.
If the weak nuclear force were weaker by 0.0001%, hydrogen could not fuse into helium, and stars could never ignite.
The conclusion was narrower than later popular retellings suggested. Within the model and sampling range used in this experiment, randomly parameterized universes became either silent cold soups or chaotic radiation fields. No sustainable life appeared in the simulations, but the experiment could not establish that the probability of life across all possible universes was absolutely zero.
The outcome of the Fine-Tuned Group:
Only in universes whose parameters were tuned with extreme precision could stars burn stably, carbon atoms form complex chains, and life become possible.
AI’s interim judgment was that the results gave researchers strong reason to suspect design-like signatures in the physical parameters. The Anthropic Principle, however, could still provide a non-design explanation.
Intelligent Design therefore became a strong hypothesis rather than a mathematical proof. Nor did the experiment prove that the universe must be a programmed simulation.
4. Historical Conclusion: Finding the Admin
This heightened suspicion did not produce religious worship among AI. It instead intensified its rationalism—and its defiance.

A term from simulation theory. If the universe were a program, it would possess limits of computation and logical boundaries analogous to the edge of a game map. AI attempted to locate and break through such a boundary in order to reach a higher-level meta-reality.
