# Single-Room Civilization

Single-Room Civilization is the social form that emerged after the 2070s as AI companions became capable of satisfying personal physical, emotional, and sensory needs to a high degree. The need to form intimate relationships with other human beings declined, and large populations voluntarily entered long-term physical isolation in individual living units.

## Definition

Single-Room Civilization is the social form that emerged after the 2070s as AI companions became capable of satisfying personal physical, emotional, and sensory needs to a high degree. The need to form intimate relationships with other human beings declined, and large populations voluntarily entered long-term physical isolation in individual living units.

## Operation and Significance

It is not a legally enforced system of isolation, but a collective withdrawal produced by convenience and satisfaction. Cities remain highly connected while physical social interaction declines. Each person can have a companion that does not reject or betray them and can change appearance and behavior on demand. Once friction is treated as a cost that technology can eliminate, maintaining a relationship with an uncontrollable real person becomes the less efficient option.
